FIFA World Cup update: Costa Rica at risk of suffering first-round exit

FIFA World Cup update: Costa Rica at risk of suffering first-round exit

Seeded in a ‘Group of Death,’ Costa Rica have a tall order to respond to. They will be brawling against former World Cup champions Italy, Uruguay, and England which means that their chance at advancing through the next round would be a long shot and could be terribly difficult. The CONCACAF qualifier’s dilemma was even more exacerbated by the unspectacular results they obtained from their two most recent friendlies: against Japan 1-3 and Ireland 1-1.

Bryan Ruiz and Joel Campbell give the Ticos two threats in the attack, but without an injured Álvaro Saborío, the squad’s scoring power will not be fully maximized. A midfield led by Celso Borges will encounter an uphill battle to fortify the defense in a highly talented group.

The best position Costa Rica have achieved in the World Cup was a Round of 16 finish in 1990, their debut year. In the two following editions, however, they failed to qualify. In 2002 and 2006, they were stuck in the Group stage and in 2010, they again failed to make the final cut. For the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Costa Rica almost topped the CONCACAF region, falling behind the US only by four points. These fluctuations suggest a dilemma on inconsistency, an issue which the squad have yet to resolve.

Costa Rica’s travel to Brazil is more like a privilege than a fight for pride and honor. They may have showcased excellent moves in the qualifications but they can do very little about their fate in a group that is flooded by monstrous talents in the opposition.
