FIFA World Cup update: Colombia share the points with Senegal in a World Cup warm-up

Despite leading the scoring in the first half, Colombia still went home with just one point after friendly opponents Senegal held them in a draw. With Radamel Falcao on the benches, the side squandered two goals for their African rivals and left the Estadio Pedro Bidegaín with points dropped.

Teofilo Gutierrez opened the scoring for Los Cafeteros before it was doubled by Carlos Bacca at half-time. Colombia looked to be winning a clean sheet in the brawl, until Senegal gave them powerful retaliations that would have qualified for World Cup-level maneuvers. Two minutes past the break, Moussa Konate shot from the left across keeper Faryd Mondragon’s goal. Midfielder Cheikh Ndoye, then, levelled the scoring just five minutes later with a shot from outside the box. The match reduced both sides to 10 men after Ibrahima Seck was sent off and Alexander Mejia was injured.

“We knew it would be tough, that’s how African teams play, they run to the last minute,” said Colombia right back Camilo Zuniga. “This match was very useful for us and the professor [coach Jose Pekerman] will get a lot from it.”

Colombia made their two international friendly competitions this year end in winless results, following an earlier draw with Tunisia on March. They may have been unbeaten for their last seven matches but only two of those delivered with substantial returns.

Falcao, still recuperating from a knee ligament injury, hopes that he will make it to Pekerman’s final line-up. He aims to help Colombia achieve excellent goals against Greece, Ivory Coast, and Japan in Group C for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
