FIFA World Cup update: Casteel not included in Belgium’s final headcount

FIFA World Cup update: Casteel not included in Belgium’s final headcount

With a leg injury that has not yet subsided to acceptable conditions, Koen Casteels has failed to make it to coach Marc Wilmots’s final cut for the Belgian team. He, instead, was replaced by Sammy Bossut of Zulte-Waregem as Rode Duivels’ third-choice goalkeeper.

Coach Marc Wilmots tried to fully stretch the deadline for submitting the final list of names to be included in the squad in order to monitor Casteels’ status more closely. However, due to him not able to show promising improvements with his health, Wilmots had to wrap up the final decision. Wilmots originally submitted a 24-man group with the names of both Casteels and Bossut, but confirmed that only the latter would travel to Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Casteels suffered the injury playing for Hoffenheim on April 6 and had surgery the following day.

As per FIFA rules, players can be replaced in the event of an unforeseen circumstance at least 24 hours before a team’s first World Cup fixture. Bossut was given his first cap in the friendly win against Luxembourg a few days ago. The rest of the Belgian squad were announced earlier, with veteran Club Brugge midfielder Timmy Simons and Radja Nainggolan of Roma the most notable absentees, along with injured Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke.

Belgium will start their World Cup campaign at the Group stage against Algeria, Russia, and South Korea. Of this list, they have the best odds to top their cluster.
