FIFA World Cup update: Bosnia and Herzegovina will not go to Brazil as ‘tourists’

As the sole debutants in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Bosnia and Herzegovina will understandably be one of the least favorites to win. However, team manager Safet Sušić has reaffirmed that Zmajevi will not be heading to Brazil only as ‘tourists’ or underdogs. He believes his men are talented enough to bring down even the most veteran World Cup superpowers.

The team are still a work in progress, with plenty of improvisations they needed to do to fill up the loopholes—particularly in the defence—in various campaigns. Nevertheless, the energy and teamwork that exist at the core of the squad are some of the most pristine among all the national teams. With the likes of Edin Dzeko (Manchester City), Miralem Pjanic (Roma), Vedad Ibisevic (Stuttgart) and Senad Lulic (Lazio), as well as veterans Zvjezdan Misimovic (Guizhou Renhe) and Emir Spahic (Bayer Leverkusen), Bosnia and Herzegovina have a serious scoring ensemble that their competitors should not take for granted. This brood has a combined total of nearly 500 caps, which should translate into results.

Sušić’s team have had to endure the pains of national independence following the wars that happened in the 1990s (at the flanks of the dissolution of the Yugoslav Federation). In the midst of these dilemmas, football served as the cure to heal the wounds brought by the political perils. In other words, the sport became the country’s most developed facet and that ‘gift’ will serve them best in the upcoming World Cup.

In the qualifiers, Bosnia and Herzegovina scored 30 goals in group-stage play, impressive enough to be in Europe’s top four in terms of goals scored. They will compete against Argentina, Nigeria, and Iran in preliminary stage and hope reach at least the last 16.
