FIFA World Cup update: Bonus issues halt Cameroon squad’s flight to Brazil

The Cameroonian squad were supposed to be onboard a plane going to Brazil on Sunday morning but issues surrounding the players’ bonuses have halted the flight. Samuel Eto’o and the rest of the players refused to leave their hotel in Yaounde due to their FIFA bonuses being so much less than what they were expecting.

Two weeks ago, there were also reported attempts by the players to carry out a demonstration during a World Cup training, but none of them materialized. This was later overshadowed by two ample-scoring friendlies against Germany 2-2 and Moldova 1-0. However, the successes also punctuated the tension within the national team.

Cameroon are set to duel against Mexico this Friday for their debut fixture in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The following days will see them fight against Croatia and host nation Brazil. The Indomitable Lions, managed by German coach Volker Finke, should be embarking on the trip with top seeds like Samuel Eto’o, Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Barcelona’s Alex Song.

Finke’s men and the Cameroon national squad in general are not innocent to similar issues related to finances leading to the World Cup. In fact, similar disputes were reported in both 1994 and 2002—editions that did not see the side advance beyond the Group stage. Cameroon’s most impressive recent achievement in the tournament came more than two decades ago, when they reached the knockout stages during the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
