FIFA World Cup update: Algeria aim to surpass poor 2010 performance

FIFA World Cup update: Algeria aim to surpass poor 2010 performance

Algeria are installing a fourth (and second consecutive) appearance in the World Cup, thanks to the success they obtained from the CAF segment of the qualifications. However, as with the years past, they are still plagued by huge uncertainties of their most probable placement in the competition. In the past the World Cups they have been to, they never advanced past the Group stage. In South Africa four years ago, they incurred two defeats and drew with England to finish bottom of their group. This time around, they will make sure they would at least reach the Round of 16.

“In the last World Cup, we were not afraid, but we didn’t know this competition. We were thinking the World Cup is very, very hard; too hard. But this is normal when you’ve never been there,” said Algeria center-back Madjid Bougherra. “But when you have been, and played in these games, you say, ‘Wow, OK, this is the biggest competition in the world, but they’re still the same players. We all have two legs and two hands. Of course, some players are more talented, but we can show something’.”

The 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil will yield much more rooms to display excellent maneuvers especially that the side are not part of a ‘Group of Death.’ The challenge remains, but it has dramatically—theoretically—diminished with more ‘manageable’ opponents vis-à-vis Russia, South Korea, and Belgium. Of these rivals, only Belgium can be considered a relatively mammoth threat.

In Bougherra, Medhi Lacen, Rafik Djebbour, and Hassan Yebda, Algeria has substantial experience. Sofiane Feghouli also heads a thrilling new generation of French-born Algerians.
