FIFA World Cup Qualifications (UEFA Group D) Preview: Romania vs. Hungary

FIFA World Cup Qualifications (UEFA Group D) Preview: Romania vs. Hungary

Romania

For the UEFA Group D 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifications, Netherlands are seen to be the apparent frontrunners. This means that the second and third placers have to put their best foot forward in order to qualify for the playoffs and consequently, engage in the World Cup matches next year in Brazil. Hungary are currently placed second in the table, but Romania (ranked third) are just one point behind of their rivals. Their upcoming qualifier tournament on September 7 will decide which of them will make the greater advantage to progress in the stages.

The last time (March 23) Romania and Hungary created a faceoff resulted in a draw 2-2, which was witnessed at Hungary’s home court, Ferenc Puskás Stadion, in Budapest. Hungary, via Vilmos Vanczak, delivered the first goal at the 16th minute. Romania’s Adrian Mutu leveled this out through a penalty goal. Balazs Dzsudzsak, however, was quick to counter Mutu’s attack, as he also scored a penalty goal at the 71st minute. Alexandru Chipciu concluded the match in a draw after making the equalizer on extra time.

This time around, Romania will play as the home side with the Arena Națională serving as the venue. They played impressively well in their away match with their opponents, and there is a growing thrill that they will perform even better now that they are already in their comfort zone. The team successfully started their Qualifications stint last year with a 2-0 away win over Estonia followed by a 4-0 victory at home against meek Andorra, and another away triumph against Turkey (1-0). In comparison, Hungary also started their FIFA campaign with a stellar win over Andorra 5-0, but succumbed to Netherlands 1-4 just a few days later.

The very tight competition between Romania and Hungary is a facet worth noting, as it makes the clash an absolute entertainment for supporters who love unpredictable outcomes. If it will not end in a draw (again), the match will probably favor the home team.
