FIFA World Cup Opening Recap: Group D

FIFA World Cup Opening Recap: Group D

The 2014 FIFA World Cup kicked off the Group D battles with astonishing showpieces. But while half of the four competing nations extolled in merriment, the other half were marooned in frustration. By the end of the curtain raisers, Costa Rica surprisingly dominated the group, trailed closely by Italy. The group winners thrashed European giants England and South American powerhouse Uruguay, respectively.

World Cup betting is all over the place, with most audiences rooting for either Italy or Uruguay and to a lesser extent, England. With Costa Rica finishing in the top position, it would be hard to ignore how the subsequent matches will turn out. A good guesswork might carry some merits, but the matches will continue making exciting surprises.

Costa Rica found the net three times in the second half en route to a massive 3-1 victory against 2010 World Cup semifinalists Uruguay. Oscar Duarte scored one of the most spectacular goals of the edition so far, made even more gorgeous by the stunning efforts of Joel Campbell and Marcos Ureña. Uruguay might have opened the scoring via Edinson Cavani but the final verdict easily favored the Costa Ricans.

Italy and England have been considered football heavyweights and so when they battled out in the curtain raiser, many felt their excitement running down through their spines. The show was generally very entertaining but as with most speculations, Italy dominated over England. The four-time World Cup champions proved that they could add another victory in their record with a 2-1 thrashing of their European neighbor. The Italians’ performance was far from their frustrating 2010 display and they looked very determined to reach the finals.

Costa Rica’s reign at the top of the group could just be temporary. Italy will eventually take on the lead while Uruguay and England could still pull off successes if they are able to find the key formula toward winning.
