FIFA World Cup Opening Recap: Group B

FIFA World Cup Opening Recap: Group B

Group B was supposed to be one of the most predictable clusters in the 2014 FIFA World Cup but as it turned out, it came off highly entertaining as well as very surprising. Chile, Australia, Netherlands, and most especially the defending champions Spain all produced shocking displays.

Current standings place the Netherlands and Chile in the top two, respectively, with each securing three points from their thumping of Australia and Spain—both squads ending up in the bottom. The Dutch squad earned the most goals (5) followed by the Chileans (3).

As the top online betting favorites of their group, Spain performed rather poorly. The side were slammed by the 2010 runners up Netherlands 5-1 which left many spectators thinking about the plausible rustiness of the current Spanish squad—or the management. Neither Xavi nor Iniesta salvaged the team from the unforeseen tragedy, with both of them down, humiliated, and exhausted. Coach Vicente del Bosque must carry out a major plan to improve, if not modify, his strategies. Oranje, meanwhile, must celebrate to the highest degree after Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben each scored a brace while Stefan de Vrij netted his very first international goal. There is so much in store for the Netherlands in the matches to come.

Australia started their World Cup campaign with a disappointing defeat from Chile 3-1. The loss, however, was not necessarily a reflection of a poor Socceroo talent slate. In fact, they succumbed to Chile not without causing so much sweat to La Roja. While the score does seem morale-boosting for the South Americans, the several [failed] attempts by Australia were enough to scare Jorge Sampaoli’s men. Tim Cahill ensured that Chile will not run away with a clean sheet, and despite the downfall, the Land Down Under might have obtained substantial hints of the potential weakness in Chile’s central defense. They can use this as reference for their future face-offs.

Spain fell off the cliff at the opening of the group stage but will find ways to redeem themselves and totally change the current rankings. Netherlands will remain metal-solid with their form and Australia could pull off some stunners in their subsequent fixtures. Chile would be in danger if they cannot do anything to improve their defense in the center.
