FIFA 2014 World Cup Rundown: Into The Quarter-Finals

FIFA 2014 World Cup Rundown: Into The Quarter-Finals

The Round of 16 ended in a dramatic fashion, which made the beautiful game even more beautiful. It was a heartache for those who were eliminated and those which survived cannot be more thankful for the opportunity to rise to the top.

Recap

Brazil and Costa Rica secured their quarter-finals slot through a nerve-wrecking penalty shootout. Both Chile and Greece were unwilling to throw their white towels. But at the end of the day, it was the heroic saves of Julio Cesar and Keylor Navas that prevailed.

Tim Howard is also one of the goalkeepers who shone during the Round of 16. Howard tried to prevent Belgium’s attack. Unfortunately, USA proved to be the weaker squad in the said clash.

Meanwhile, Algeria gave Germany the scare that it needed. Previously tagged as the tournament’s minnow, it surprised the world when it entered into the Round of 16. However, they too, have to accept that Germany is the better group.
On the other hand, despite the absence of Franck Ribery, the French were able to outlast Nigeria’s Super Eagles. A consistent performance helped them in their campaign.
As for Argentina, once again, it justified why they are one of the favorites of world cup betting tipswhen they denied Switzerland. The talismanic striker, Lionel Messi ensured La Albiceleste’s World Cup future.

Another striker, who shocked the crowed was Colombia’s James Rodriguez. He scored two (2) goals against Uruguay to help the team advance. Who ever said Colombia needed Radamel Falcao? Rodriguez was the group’s main man

Lastly, this tournament will never forget Netherlands’ dramatic win over Mexico. A change of strategy helped Louis van Gaal earned the respect of many when he maneuvered a late rally for the Oranje, four (4) minutes before Mexico was almost sure of entering into the quarter-finals.

Although, it was a heartbreaking moment for El Tri, Guillermo Ochoa’s saves will not be forgotten and of course, Miguel “Piojo” Herrera’s burning football passion.

The scene-stealer

Although USA lost, Howard’s record breaking saves was the ultimate scene stealer of the Round of 16. He made a total of 16 saves—something that has never been done before.

The weakest link

The underdog, Costa Rica is seen as the early casualties of the quarter-finals.  Yet, one cannot be so sure. To note, Costa Rica has already beaten three (3) of the competition’s former champion (Italy, Uruguay and England).

Which team will advance?

Brazil, the host will always be the heavy favorite. But if they are not careful, the likes of Argentina, Netherlands and Germany may take its place.
