FIFA 2014 World Cup Rundown: Group H (Onward To The Round Of 16)

FIFA 2014 World Cup Rundown: Group H (Onward To The Round Of 16)

It is not surprising to see Belgium advance to the next stage of the competition. They have been the heavy favorite in the group, followed by Russia. Unfortunately for Russia, they will be forced to join South Korea in exiting the tournament as sudden turn of events witnessed the minnow, Algeria advance.

Recap

Since Day 1, Belgium is already expected to dominate in the Group Stage and indeed, the squad lived up to expectations. They have managed to keep a clean record as they advance to the next round. Eden Hazard proved that he is certified beast on the pitch. The young prodigy have been terrorizing Belgium’s opponents, whilst his teammates provided the support they need—converting every scoring opportunity that they encounter. Romelu Lukaku continues to experience a goal drought. Nevertheless, the versatility of the Belgian squad opened scori8ng avenues for the likes of Marouane Fellaini, Dries Mertens, Divock Origi and Jan Vertonghen.

Meanwhile, Russia’s performance has not been at par with what their supporters assumed. They started the tournament with a draw against South Korea and lost the opportunity to advance as Algeria beat them to the ground.

Speaking of South Korea, the squad was unable to maintain their momentum after the stalemate against Russia. The result of their two (2) matches did not help them either since both ended in a defeat.

The scene-stealer

Algeria readily benefited from their minnow stature. The club made a shocking entry into the Round of 16 after defeating South Korea and equalizing with Russia. While world cup odds  continue to see them as the tournament’s weakest link, their current scenario distances them from the overwhelming pressure of the sporting event, thus, making them  more focused and even more determined.

The weakest link

Far from the image that media built, Fabio Capello and his men, were pure hype.

Which team will advance?

Once again, Belgium is expected to have an easy route. Algeria will have to face Germany’s onslaught and while it looks like there is a tough road ahead of them, there is nothing wrong to expect another stunner.
