FIFA 2014 World Cup Rundown: Group D (Onward To The Round Of 16)

FIFA 2014 World Cup Rundown: Group D (Onward To The Round Of 16)

Costa Rica was the ultimate stunner to both its supporters and detractors. Often dubbed as one of Group D’s weakest links, it made a surprising rise to the group’s top spot.

Also qualifying into the next round of the tournament is Uruguay, whilst World Cup powerhouse, Italy, had to go home empty-handed. The same thing holds true for England, which has failed to win a single match in the competition.

After punishing Uruguay and Italy, the even steven finish against England barely affected the squad’s qualification into the Round of 16. As a matter of fact, a loss will not prevent them from advancing.

Between the two, it was England, which suffered the consequence of the said draw. The latter was eyeing for an honorable exit after failing to secure victories despite its impressive performances. Unfortunately, the Three Lions’ were not enough to help them get through the initial stage.

On the other hand, Italy’s unexpected exit forced its head honcho, Cesare Prandelli to leave his post. Uruguay had the upper hand in their deciding match and a bite mark from the controversial, Luis Suarez.

The scene-stealer

Uruguay’s win was not the scene-stealer in the group. Luis Suarez’s (biting rampage) was the real thing.
During the dying minutes of the do-or-die encounter, Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini and Suarez had a collision. Slowly after the incident, Chiellini complained that Suarez bit his shoulders. The defender even showed the marks, but Suarez never got a booking.
FIFA is now conducting a preliminary investigation over the said incident. If found guilty, Suarez might face a long-term sanction.

The weakest link

In terms of team performance, this goes to England. Yet, in terms of individual performance, Suarez’s name will readily show up.

Which team will advance?

World cup odds favor Costa Rica to advance. Pitted against Greece, the squad elicits better possibilities of winning easily.

On the other hand, Uruguay can match the strength of the Colombian squad. But if Suarez bites again or misses the whole tournament, La Celeste might exit the tournament soon.
