Dajimo Srna: Croatia’s Determined Soul

Dajimo Srna: Croatia’s Determined Soul

Recognized for his superb free kicks and impeccable set-pieces, Darijo Srna has become the iconic symbol of Croatian football. As the most capped player of the country, consider a World Cup match incomplete if Srna’s name does not crop out.

Srna’s humble beginnings play an important role to what he has become today. His was a story of a man whose talents were nearly forgotten due to the atrocities brought by the Yugoslaviian breakdown. The horrors of the war subjected him to discrimination. Nevertheless, he used the hostile situation to turn his focus on the beautiful game.

Srna signed his first contract with Hadjuk Split. Such move opened bigger opportunities for his budding career and landed him a spot in Shakthar Donetsk. It is through this club that he began to establish his name.

Shakthar is one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Playing in the said squad gave him a bigger venue to showcase his strengths and skills, which, as mentioned, are very evident in free kicks and set-pieces.
During his stay, he helped the club clinched the UEFA Cup in 2009, 7 domestic league trophies and 5 Ukranian Super Cup silverwares. However, it was not until in 2002 that he was asked to play for the Croatian national squad. He has been a mainstay of the team since then.
It did not take too long before Srna manifested his dominance in the midfield. In 2003, he scored his first competitive goal during the Euro 2004 qualifier. Two (2) years later, he was hailed as Croatia’s top scorer during the campaign period and in 2008 during the Euro qualifier, his free kick snatched an important win for the national squad.

Srna’s consistent appearance in international competitions earned him the right to the Croatia’s captain. The depth and extent of his experience is a definite asset that can be further seen with the way he bring out the best of his team mates such as Mari Mandzukic, Luka Modric, to name a few.

Srna has never played in other club aside from Shakhthar. His loyalty speaks well of his character. If the loyalty that he has shown in his club transcends beyond all reasons, then one can only expect him to be more loyal and more determined in his national squad. Srna is not getting any younger and evidently, the upcoming World cup matches could be his last hurrah. But his last hurrah is not meant to say goodbye. Instead, it is more of building a legacy that future players can build on.
