Capello Includes Injured Shirokov In The Final List

Russia’s trusted manager, Fabio Capello made a bold move in including Roman Shirokov in its final World Cup roster. This is despite nursing an Achilles tendon injury.

Shirokov has been on loan at FC Krasnodar and has not seen much football action since being injured last April 26. It is also the reason behind the inability of Russia’s team captain to participate in pre-World Cup matches. However, this hardly affected Capello’s decision to make him a part of the Russian contingent.

Due to the doubts casted upon Shirokov’s inclusion, Capello’s decision did not go unnoticed. Eyebrows were raised and controversies are starting to crop out. The noise tends to get louder since the Reading striker, Pavel Pogrebnyak did not make it to the final cut.

Capello’s present situation shares similarities with Spain’s head honcho, Vicente del Bosque. Recently, Del Bosque has also taken the limelight when he chose Atletico Madrid and Chelsea bound poacher, Diego Costa over Alvaro Negredo and Jose Navas. Costa was then sidelined by a leg injury. This has prevented him from participating in the final match against Barcelona and resulted to an early exit during the Champions League encounter against Real Madrid. Due to this, a cloud of doubt loomed over Costa’s possibility of representing Spain.

Shirokov is among the five players of the Euro 2008, which propelled Russia to the semifinals to participate in this year’s world cup matches. Along with him are Igor Akinfeev, Yuri Zhirkov, Sergei Ignashevich and Vasili Berezutskiy. Evidently, his extensive experience could be one of the factors that Capello considered.

Russia is pitted against Belgium, Korea Republic and Algeria. It is valued to win at profitable odds of 3.20.
