Australia Survival Chances At Risk As The Squad Bows Down To Its Last Friendly

Australia Survival Chances At Risk As The Squad Bows Down To Its Last Friendly

A narrow defeat to Croatia raised more questions on Australia’s chances of advancing in the 2014 World Cup. With less than a week before the awaited event, Ange Postecoglou and his men needs a little ounce of miracle to survive their tough group.

Australia’s encounter against Croatia was the last in its list of pre-World Cup preparation and sadly, the best result that they have delivered was a stalemate against South Africa. Ecuador defeated them and just recently, Croatia, stole the limelight from them when Nikica Jelavic scored on the 58th.

But despite the loss, Postecoglou expressed his satisfaction over the team’s performance. He acknowledged the strength of the Croatian contingent and mentioned that with the quality and depth of their opponents, what the Socceroos showed was not short of being impressive. However, he also disclosed his disappointment over Australia’s “lack of composure” and ability to create more scoring chances.

While it is true that Australia has failed to win any of its pre-World Cup friendlies, Postecoglou and the rest of the squad are taking positives from the said experience. This is most especially true with the result of their most recent match. He added that the club, still, has time to prepare and formulate a new strategy when they face Chile.

Australia is often described as the “unluckiest team” in the competition. Grouped against the incumbent champion, Spain, the incumbent runner-up, Netherlands and the 13th best squad, Chile, how the country would fare during its difficult world cup matches generate doubt and worry.
