Argentina: On seizing their Third World Cup title

While most of Argentina’s fixtures in the 2014 FIFA World Cup have so far been less explosive than what people originally expected, they were good enough to make the side the only ensemble among the last four to have not recorded a loss or a draw in their campaign. They all won their fixtures beginning in the Group stage and they have never been defeated even just once. Although they only won on penalties against the Netherlands in the semi-finals, they adequately proved how intense they are as a South American powerhouse.

Talisman Lionel Messi has always been Albiceleste’s strongest bullet and for most spectators, he is the sole reason why Argentina is being rooted for. He scored four goals in the tournament so far—all in the Group stage—and provided an assist to di Maria in the Knock-out stage. Although his attacking prowess could be seen as less powerful than his La Liga performances, he remains hugely dangerous to whoever attempts to go against him.

Sergio Romero also showed prolific performance in the competition despite some doubts about his efficiency as a goalkeeper. Needless to say, he has gone 330 minutes without conceding a goal in the knockout rounds. In the mid-field, Angel di Maria serves as the rock to rely on but his injury might prevent him from participating in the final. Ezequiel Garay, Marcos Rojo, and Martin Demichellis are the squad’s best defenders and they played vital roles throughout Albiceleste’s campaign. In addition to Messi, Argentina can rely on forwards Gonzalo Higuain and Sergio Aguero although many have criticized their seemingly lame and uninspiring performances in the tournament behind the great talents they supposedly have.

In terms of odds, team work, statistics, and instincts, Germany dominate Argentina by a mile. However, the underdogs can still pull off some stunners and winning the entire tournament is not a remote possibility either.
