2014 World Cup Team Highlight: Team Costa Rica

2014 World Cup Team Highlight: Team Costa Rica

Costa Rica’s 4-year wait paid off as the squad made a grand World Cup comeback. Not only did they return into the spotlight, they stunned the crowd when they secured a spot into the quarter-finals.

The Los Ticos first made an impression when it thrashed Uruguay. The match’s result was attributed to luck, but Jorge Luis Pinto and his men destroyed Italy’s hopes of advancing. During their last match in the Group Stage, they held England to a scoreless stalemate. The so-called “minnow” of the group toppled all its opponents and clinched the top spot.

Pitted against Greece in the Round of 16, Costa Rica fought tooth and nail to stop a resilient Greek squad. The encounter was soon decided by a nerve-wrecking penalty shootout in which, they emerged as the victorious team.

The manager

Pinto’s 5-4-1 did wonders to the Costa Rican camp. He stuck to it since day one and so far, he has no regrets in using such formation. It gave him the pace that Costa Rica needed and used it to counter their opponents and convert the winning goals. While it s is true that changing tactics is a must for every competing team, Pinto defied the odds and his belief in the system was further strengthened. Not so many managers can afford to do what Pinto did and perhaps the only explanation for this is the manager’s utmost awareness of his team’s capabilities.

The go-to-guy

Joel Campbell and Bryan Ruiz do the scoring for Costa Rica and Keylor Navas ensured that the squad would limit the number of goals they concede.

Defining moment

Every world cup matchthat Costa Rica participated this year is a defining moment for the squad. They destroyed three former World Cup champions and they outlasted Greece despite being down to ten (10) men.

What the odds say

Costa Rica continues to embrace the minnow status in betting. At 12BET, it is valued to win the current competition at 55.
