2014 World Cup Final Countdown: Argentina Breaks The 24-Year Curse

2014 World Cup Final Countdown: Argentina Breaks The 24-Year Curse

After a 24-year wait, Argentina is back into the limelight. It was never a bed of roses for La Albiceleste. But certainly, they have accomplished what many deemed impossible.

Breaking the curse

One of the main criticisms of Argentina’s strong performance in the ongoing World Cup is being grouped with weaker groups. Although such arguments have their merits, Argentina’s superb finish during the Round of 16 and quarter-finals  is beyond question. Switzerland and Belgium are no push-overs. The two readily featured in their World Cup campaign, but Alejandro Sabella and his men showed that they are the better team and just recently, they threw death into Netherlands’ hopes of snatching their first trophy.

Netherlands was one of the strong contenders in the competition’s final match. They are strong and cannot be easily intimidated.
But a determined Argentina cannot share its dream with their opponent. They held them at bay and while there are several lapses during their play, they were able to force the squad to go for a penalty shootout.

Winning in a shootout is the least thing that Argentina could accomplish—well, considering the fact that Netherlands just survived a shootout scare and even earned plaudits for its manager’s tactical supremacy.

Yet, to the surprise of many, Argentina survived. And with flying colors too. Sergio Romero—the man deemed to be the weakest link in the squad salvaged the Argentinian dream of lifting the World Cup trophy again.

The go-to-guy

Lionel Messi will always be one of Argentina’s go-to-guy. But in this recent match-up, it was Romero who readily stood out.  It was his precise and well calculated saves that ensured why Argentina will play in the final.

Defining moment

When Romero denied the prolific Wesley Sneijder during the shootout, it signaled Argentina’s journey to greatness.

What the odds say

World Cup betting odds valued at 1.91 are given to Argentina. The latter also receives an Asian handicap of 0-0.5.
