2014 World Cup Aftermath: Shattered Belgian Dreams

2014 World Cup Aftermath: Shattered Belgian Dreams

The competition’s dark horse, Belgium has finally encountered its demise. Going against Argentina left the Belgian squad with tattered dreams.

Despite a strong and seemingly invincible start, Belgium has finally met its nemesis in this series of world cup matches.

Pitted against Argentina, Marc Wilmots and his men were forced to bow out of the competition.

Gonzalo Higuain set Argentina’s pace in the face-off. His winning goal on the 8th minute was the only goal recorded during the entire clash. Somehow, it demoralized the Belgian squad and the latter has neither recovered nor responded to the challenge. They had opportunities to equalize or even steal the show from the football powerhouse. However, their efforts went in vain.

Where it went wrong

To say that Belgium’s system is flawed is an unfair description of the team’s performance.

After their 8-year absence, qualifying into the quarter-finals is already a huge achievement. It was a grand return, which propelled Belgium’s names into the apex of football success.

If there is any shortcoming that the Red Devils failed to address, this is the lack of experience and unfortunately, Argentina has plenty to offer in this aspect.

Onward to 2018

Belgium’s current squad displays tons of potential. It is a young group with overwhelming talent, which, if honed and further developed could catapult Belgium into the zenith of football success.

Belgium needs to be patient. They need more time to grow. And with their impressive performance, definitely, they will not have to wait that long.
