Contending for a spot in the semi-finals (and ultimately, the finale) at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the Netherlands and Costa Rica will have to move mountains to earn all the three points. Netherlands were last edition’s runners up while Costa Rica are making their very first appearance in the quarter-finals. Although this match-up is a combination of the veterans and the newbies, an explosive display from both sides must be expected.

Netherlands

The Netherlands made an early spectacle following the defeat they inflicted to defending champions Spain in the Group stage. They eventually ended up as the group’s top team and embarked on their Round of 16 journey with a relatively convenient 2-1 win over Mexico. In Robben, Van Persie, Sneijder, and Huntelaar, Oranje have a huge chance at advancing through the higher rounds of the competition. However, Lous van Gaal’s side are not without a loophole. Nigel de Jong, one of the squad’s best midfielders, is out due to injury. They also have a problem on possession, with Mexico in the last meeting possessing the ball more often.

Costa Rica

One of the tournament’s dark horses, Costa Rica have so far been very impressive throughout their matches. They are making their appearance in the last eight for the very first time in their history and that says a lot about the team’s current squad. Levante’s Keylor Navas came out as La Sele’s talisman. The goalkeeper was able to render two sides (Italy and England) in the Group stage goalless while only conceding one goal to Uruguay. At the Round of 16, he made sure that Greece will not earn more than one goal and produced the best saves in the penalty shootout.

World Cup betting tip: Experience is the Netherlands’ edge over Costa Rica and they will capitalize on this facet to earn all the spoils.
