World Cup Qualifications (CAF Third Round): Egypt vs. Ghana

World Cup Qualifications (CAF Third Round): Egypt vs. Ghana

Match Date: 19 November 2013

Match Venue: 30 June Stadium, Cairo

Seeding at arm’s length

Their berth in the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals is almost certain. After defeating Egypt 6-1 in the first leg of the World Cup qualifications (CAF third round), Ghana could make their next joist to be just some form of formality. The massive success accentuated the immense power Ghana is capable of doing when it comes to world football, and that is the very reason why they are among the best in the planet. Egypt were unfortunate to face a powerhouse squad like the Black Stars, which could potentially compromise their chance for a World Cup finals entry.

How the battle turned out

From start to finish, Ghana were all over the Egyptians. Asamoah Gyan opened the scoring, which was capped by a stunning pass from Abdul Waris. In the 22nd minute, Michael Essien doubled his side’s lead, but this was not because he buried the goal himself. He maneuvered in different directions before entering 10 yards and causing Egypt’s Wael Gomaa to score an embarrassing own goal.

A penalty that Mohamed Aboutriaka converted in the 41st minute allowed Egypt to hoist silver lining in the increasingly intense clash. However, they were not just well-armored enough to not concede a goal again. Waris scored just before the break and that murdered Egypt’s hope for a recovery. Gyan scored his side’s fourth goal less than 10 minutes into the second half and Sulley Muntari got in on the action when he brought home a penalty kick. Christian Atsu rounded up the 6-1 assault.

World Cup betting tip: In spite of the pretty façade they built in the group stage, Egypt will be on edge to race toward the World Cup finals. The African qualifying format is outright tough, but more so for The Pharaohs facing the Ghanaian juggernauts. As with the first leg of their playoffs, the upcoming match between these sides will finish in favor of The Black Stars. In fact, the first leg may have been enough for the team to book their ticket to Brazil.
