World Cup qualification (UEFA Second Round): Ukraine vs. France

World Cup qualification (UEFA Second Round): Ukraine vs. France

Match Date: 15 November 2013 (local)

Match Venue: Olympic Stadium, Kiev

Of the eight most competitive second placers in the EUFA group stage segment of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifications, Ukraine were the fourth best rated team to qualify for the second round. While they missed the chance to obtain immediate seeding in the finals through the group stage, the Ukrainians now have an opportunity to continue their campaign with the play-offs approaching. The side have generally been very aggressive in the earlier stages of the competition, it just happened that the eventual leaders, England, were much more in it to win it.

Mykhaylo Fomenko’s players are akin to a decisive attack, as seen on the 24 individual occasions when they successfully found the net. During their entire group stage run, the squad have only conceded four goals and by the final tally, they were only one point behind of the resulting victors.

For the French team, missing out the World Cup can be a monumental embarrassment—coach Didier Deschamps even referred to it as a “disaster.” The side may have caused dismay among supporters when they failed to score high enough in the group stage to give them access into dominating the entire thing, but they are very much determined to win the playoffs and book their ticket to Brazil.

The perennial finalists and former champions (1998) were three points behind Spain during the group stage. The total score was obtained from a W5-2D-L1 record, of which 15 goals were netted. Top scorer Franck Ribery is the most zealous of the club’s players, and will likely lead the team into thrashing their second round opponents. France are both very skilled in offense and defense, and are expected to upgrade these disciplines even more when they start embarking on their play-off efforts.

World Cup betting tip: France can be reckoned to be one of the last four European teams to secure seeding in next year’s Brazil finals. Indeed, Ukraine performed very well in the group stage, but with a more in-form adversary (not to mention their extreme eagerness) on the barricade, winning in the play-offs will prove to be highly challenging. France could steal two goals from this match, which may even end up in a clean sheet if they manage their defense rather effectively.
