In the FIFA rankings, Ivory Coast rank at number 21 while Japan are in the 47th spot. This disparity might mean nothing in the overall efficiency of the sides but it would symbolically determine how these teams fare in international competitions as prestigious as the World Cup.

Compared to their 2006 and 2010 campaigns, Ivory Coast have this year more hospitable to their championship aspiration. Those two past editions of the World Cup have placed the side in the “Group of Death,” and were, thus, largely unsuccessful in advancing past the group round. The current edition’s Group C—comprising them plus Colombia, Greece, and Japan—is less challenging for Les Éléphants, but still a potential source of some difficulties. Nevertheless, Ivorians will have more reasons to be happy about. With top player Toure peaking with his career, and Didier Drogba still so dangerous, the Sabri Lamouchi side should expect a finish that is at least in the Round of 16.

Japan may not necessarily win the votes of most spectators other than their own, but the side are completely empowered by a strong mantra of teamwork and determination. There is real substance in this squad, and it will prominently emanate in the Brazil tournaments. Alberto Zaccheroni is Samaurai Blue’s head honcho, a genius mind who has the knack for tactical flexibility and focus. In fact, and despite being born in Europe, he has already won an Asian Cup. Shinji Kagawa and Keisuke Honda are excellent players and along with rest of the team, they will not let Japan plunge into the competition’s bottom.

World Cup betting tip: Japan will succumb to Ivory Coast, but the scoring will be quite narrow.
