Spain and Chile, both nicknamed ‘La Roja,’ will meet for the seventh time since their 1950 face-off. They have been pitted in two World Cup fixtures, by which Spain have always ended up being the better side.

Spain

The underwhelming performance they produced against Netherlands and the generally surprising result they incurred for their debut match in the 2014 FIFA World Cup have both stunned almost every spectator in the world other than the Dutch audiences. The 1-5 defeat by the defending champions from the runners up was a major blow to Spain, perhaps a morale-destroying event that would leave Vicente del Bosque rethinking of his tactics in their next battles.

Exiting the pitch with their tail between their legs, Spain would have trouble absorbing what had just happened. The result was unexpected, but might also serve as warning that even previous champions have no right to be complacent. Neither Xavi nor Iniesta salvaged the team from disaster, with both of them down, humiliated, and fatigued.

Chile

Lording over the Land Down Under was supposed to be an easy job for Chile, but as it turned out, they were up to a challenge. The 3-1 victory came surprisingly a tight match, with Australia almost clinching excellent comebacks but to no avail.

Australia started rather poorly as goals from Alexis Sanchez and Jorge Valdivia saw them drown in shame only in the first 14 minutes. Tim Cahill, however, scored his third World Cup to get his side back into the game. They went close many times in the second half, but a late goal by Jean Beausejour eventually made things secure for Chile.

World Cup betting tip: Spain will be very determined to earn all the spoils from this meeting.
