Germany and Ghana are both ready for prime time. However, these two sides are strongly determined to come on top of their group and doing so will prove brutally difficult, especially for the CAF favorites.

The towering success over Portugal 4-0 in the first leg proved how hard the Germans have prepared to get them ready for the championship. The stunning—and unexpected—result was largely fueled by Thomas Mueller, who scored the very first hat-trick in the Brazil World Cup. Die Mannschaft kicked off their campaign in the best way possible and they are on course to achieving their best World Cup results in years.

The win left Portugal’s talisman Cristiano Ronaldo in deep frustration while Mueller would be very much delighted to clinch back the Golden Boot award and re-emerge as this edition’s top scorer. In the 2010 South Africa tilt, the Germans opened their road to the semi-finals with a 4-0 domination over the Socceroos, with Mueller finding the net in the second half. After finishing that tournament with five innings, Mueller now boasts of eight World Cup goals—a record that only seems likely to improve in Brazil.

A very early lead by the US seemed daunting for the Ghana, who eventually lost all three points to their North American rivals amid predictions that they will emerge dominant over the Stripes. The frustrating 2-1 defeat pinned Ghana to lower odds at going beyond the Group stage, although it is still very early to come up with definite conclusions. Clint Dempsey scored a goal just 29 seconds into the first half while John Brooks delivered a header late in the second period. Ghana were lucky to go home not empty-handed as Andre Ayew found a chance to fire a goal in the 82nd minute which served as equalizer to Dempsey’s opener.
