This battle will no longer qualify England and Australia to the Round of 16 as both sides have already been eliminated at the group stage. They, however, may still try to pull off the victory for a chance of not ending up at the bottom of the group table.

Australia

Despite dominating possession in the first half and netting the first goal in the second half via Mile Jedinak’s penalty, Australia still finished as the underdogs with a painful 2-1 result at the Estádio Beira-Rio. The clash was among the most entertaining fixtures in the competition so far. Argen Robben opened the scoring for the Dutch side but Socceroos’ Tim Cahill leveled the scoring just a minute after.

In the second period, Jedinak put Australia in the lead before Robin van Persie struck in the 58th minute and Memphis Depay delivered the decisive goal. But even if Australia had been able to hold their rivals, they could still not advance through the next round as they are several points behind another Group B giant, Chile.

Spain

With two appalling defeats in a row, Spain are hardly the superpowers they were in the 2010 World Cup. The 5-1 downfall to Netherlands was already embarrassing, but to succumb to Chile on a goalless upset is just beyond frustration. They are, however, not the first defending champions to be eliminated in the group stage of the following World Cup. Italy and a few others had the same fate in the past. La Roja must take plenty of lessons from this disaster if they wish to not experience the same fiasco in the next edition—that is if they advance from the qualifications.

World Cup betting tip: This battle will be the only World Cup fixture that will be won by Spain, placing them third in the group.
