Portugal

Portugal’s head honcho, Paul Bento describes the upcoming battle against Sweden as a “complicated and balanced match,” despite being hailed as the match’s heavy favorite.

A Seleção, which finished as runner-up in qualifiers’ group stage was just a point behind Russia. The latter accumulated 22 points that sealed their automatic World Cup berth.  Yet, what is more surprising is that majority of the points did not come solely from Cristiano Ronaldo. It came from a variety of contributors, which explains Portugal’s appeal and high of possibility of making it to the tournament.

Portugal’s popularity is attributed to its “depth and abundance of talent.” Aside from Ronaldo, the squad’s famous captain, who also happened to be their “go to guy” in every crucial match, the Portuguese side is filled with experienced players, who happened to be prominent figures in the world’s most popular leagues. Concrete examples of these are Pepe and Fabio Coentrao, who are 2 of Real Madrid’s trusted defenders. Joao Moutinho, who belonged to the big-spender AS Monaco is also part of the squad, Moreover, they have Nani who could also perform tricks while on the pitch.

Sweden

While Ronaldo served as the face of Portugal, Sweden has Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Paris Saint Germain striker has been one of the key personalities in the club’s success.

Both Ibrahimovic and Sweden’s chieftain, Erik Hamrén believes that they are the encounter’s minnow. Nevertheless, this does not mean that they cannot put up a challenge against the Portuguese.

A review of their World Cup journey showed that Sweden belonged to a more difficult group. In several occasions, they threatened to steal Germany’s spot—one of the strongest squads to participate in the tournament. Even Bento recognizes the struggle that Sweden endured to make in the intercontinental playoffs.
