Greece vs. Romania Preview (World Cup Qualifier, 2nd Leg): Greece, A Match Away From Making It To Brazil

A 3-1 victory over Romania made the Greeks even more cautious in their bid for a World Cup spot. On the other hand, Romania shall defy the odds as they fight tooth and nail to beat a clinical Greek squad.

Match Date: 19 November 2013 (local time)

Venue: National Arena

Team Form

Romania

Victor Piturca urged its players to draw inspiration from the Italian club, Juventus after falling to Greece during the first leg of the playoffs.

Piturca endures the burden of forcing a 3-0 win against Greece in their upcoming face-off. The squad needed such result to ensure that the aggregate scores shall work in their favor. He even cited Juventus’ dominating win over Napoli where Juve readily kept the Partenopei at bay.

Yet, Piturca has bigger problems to confront other than the disappointing loss. It is still unsure if the squad’s captain, Vlad Chiriches has fully recovered from a fractured nose that he incurred when his club, Tottenham Spurs clashed with Newcastle United. Chiriches already received his permission to fulfill his international duties, provided that he wears a protective match. Aside from Chirches, Alexandru Bourceanu and Costin Lazar will also miss the second leg due to suspension.

Although securing a victory becomes a far-fetched mission, Romania remains positive. As the old saying goes, everything is possible in football.

Greece

A 3-1 victory against Romania is close to ensuring Greece’s World Cup berth.

Goals coming from Kostas Mitroglou and Dimitris Salpingidis almost demolished the visitors if not for Romania’s Bogdan Stancu, who prevented a clean sheet from the match.

The Greeks may have the edge, however, none of takes the upcoming second leg lightly. The squad’s head honcho, Fernando Santos stressed and implied that defending their advantage will not be a bed of roses.

Kostas Katsouranis, one of their formidable midfielder supported Santos’ statement, saying that the upcoming match should be treated as if it is the first leg of the playoffs.
