FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Group F

FIFA World Cup Qualifiers – Group F

World Cup matches in Group F of the European Qualifier are still, looking for an automatic entrant in Brazil. With several months to go before the most awaited event, the competition becomes more intense.

Leading the pack with 18 points, Russia is on the brink of booking a ticket to Brazil. However, they squad cannot afford to have an early celebration as Portugal is keen on watching them slip and snatch the automatic qualification.

Russia needs to win its last 2 matches against Luxembourg and Azerbaijan. With these teams occupying the bottom part of the group, winning over them should not be a problem for Fabio Capello and his men.

Portugal still, has the chance to qualify automatically, But this require a little dose of miracle. Similar to Russia, they also need to win their last 2 matches, which are pitted against Luxembourg and Israel. Luxembourg is less likely to give them a headache. Israel, however, will fight tooth and nail.

Other than securing 2 straight victories, Portugal can only wish that Russia loses one of its matches. But Russia’s defeat is less likely to materialize, given their strong form. Given these circumstances at hand, Portugal is better off rallying for a slot in the play-off.

Israel, Northern Ireland, Luxembourg and Azerbaijan

Northern Ireland, Luxembourg and Azerbaijan are no longer in the competition. They are mathematically disqualified since their accumulated points range from 5 to 6 only.
Israel has a slim chance of making it to the play-off. However, this means that Russia and Portugal must lose their upcoming matches. A victory gained by any of these 2 teams means their ouster in the qualifiers.
