Al Ahly’s Extraordinary Football Strength

Al Ahly’s Extraordinary Football Strength

Al Ahly never wasted an opportunity to grab their  8th CAF Champions League trophy as they trampled their fierce rivals Orlando Pirates in Cairo. The club shall represent the African region in the upcoming Club World Cup in Morocco.

Glory amidst the rubbles

Just like other Champions League titleholders, Al Ahly’s campaign was marked by disappointment and struggles. But their story is a special one. Al Ahly needed to surmount the turmoil of political unrest in Egypt as security issues put a stop to domestic matches. This meant  a sudden exposure decline in competitive football encounters and a dwindling performance on the pitch.

Nevertheless, such concern hardly haltered the club from securing another feather in their hat.

Pitted against the Orlando Pirates, their first clash ended in a 1-1 stalemate, thus increasing the pressure for both sides as they meet in a do or die match. The second encounter had no room for extra time. Should there be another even steven finish, the penalty line or aggregate scores shall settle their differences.
Aware of their situation, Mohamed Aboutrika took the lead when he scored on the 54th minute. Ahmed Abdul Zaher immediately scored Al Ahly’s second goal and sealed their opponent’s fate via delivering a 3-1 aggregate victory.

Club World Cup Resume

The Red Devil’s qualification in the tournament was not the first for the club. Along with Auckland City, they have been a familiar face in the competition. As a matter of fact, this is their 5th appearance in the said tournament.

Playing without Zaher

Despite clinching the victory for his club, Zaher shall not join his teammates in Morocco. The striker is suspended for displaying the Rabaa during the match. Rabaa has been directly associated to supporters of the ousted president, Mohammed Morsi. The sanction was in accordance with the club’s practice of “refusing to mix between politics and sports.”

Zaher has already expressed his regret with what transpired.

While it is true that Zaher’s contributions will be missed, Al Ahly will ensure that such unfortunate event will not prevent them from their vision of clinching yet another important silverware.
